Comparison of high- and low-state X-ray spectra in the type 1.5 quasi-stellar object 2MASS 0918+2117

چکیده
When observed by XMM–Newton in 2003, the type 1.5 quasi-stellar object 2MASS 0918+2117 was found to be in a low state, with an X-ray flux approximately four to five times fainter than during an earlier Chandra observation. The 2–6 keV spectrum was unusually hard (photon index ∼ 1.25), with evidence for a reflection-dominated continuum, while a soft excess visible below ∼1 keV prevented confirmation of the anticipated low energy absorber. In a second XMM–Newton observation in 2005, the X-ray flux is found to have recovered, with a 2–10 keV continuum spectrum now typical of a broad-line active galaxy ( ∼ 2) and a deficit of flux below ∼1 keV indicative of continuum absorption in a column NH ∼ 4 × 1021 cm−2. We find the preferred ionization state of the absorbing gas to be low, which then leaves a residual soft excess of similar spectral form and flux to that found in the 2003 XMM–Newton observation. Although observed at different epochs, we note that dust in the absorbing column could also explain the red nucleus and strong optical polarization of 2MASS 0918+2117.

X-ray absorption and re-emission from an ionized outflow in the Type
We report on the analysis of a short XMM-Newton observation of the reddened Type 1 QSO 2MASS 234449+1221 first identified in the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. The underlying X-ray continuum is found to be typical of a broad-line active galaxy, with photon index Γ∼1.9. Low energy absorption can be modelled by a column NH∼10 22 cm of moderately ionised gas or a smaller column of cold gas. Addition o...

متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کامل1 Xmm-newton Results on the Ultracompact Low Mass X–ray Binary 4u 1850-087 in the Globular Cluster Ngc 6712
We report on preliminary results from our XMM-Newton observation of the Low Mass X-ray Binary 4U 1850-087, located in the galactic globular cluster NGC 6712. It is an ultracompact binary system, with an orbital period of 20.6 min. In previous low-resolution X-ray observations 4U 1850-087 displayed a soft excess residual around 0.7 keV, possibly indicative of the presence of a high Ne/O ratio, a...
متن کاملOptical spectra of the carbon - oxygen accretion discs in the ultra - compact X - ray binaries 4 U 0614 + 09 , 4 U 1543 - 624 and 2 S 0918 - 549
We present optical spectra in the range 4600 – 8600 Å for three low-mass X-ray binaries which have been suggested to belong to the class of ultra-compact X-ray binaries based on their X-ray spectra. Our spectra show no evidence for hydrogen or helium emission lines, as are seen in classical X-ray binaries. The spectrum of 4U 0614+09 does show emission lines which we identify with carbon and oxy...
